Howdy everyone!
Hope you all are doing well in this beautiful day! I am back like every other day!
Today I am going to talk about one of the most common asked question. A lot of you from here and from my friends have asked this question. So here I am, trying to inform you all with my best suggestion and information!
So our today’s topic is about non other then the most colorful fish Flowerhorn!
When I first heard the word flowerhorn,
what exactly first came into my mind is that, Is that a flower having horn? A new type of flower or what?
I am not joking! Seriously this thought came into my mind! So for knowing more, I came up to google , searched it for the very first time and and what came out as my search result blew my mind!
I was at first confused seeing flowerhorn if it was a hybrid fish like parrot fish or what! If you wanna know more about parrot fish, there is a blog out there in my website! Go check that out!
Okay where was I, Oh when I saw this fish with so much colors which is uncountable obviously , it got my attention.
So searched more about it on google, pinterest and finally went to youtube in search of seeing it live. But this story is coming from almost near about 7 years back. Back then there were not much documentary available about this fish. So for knowing more, I had to buy one myself. But back then they were really expensive. I had to wait almost 2 months to gather some money to afford a Flowerhorn.
Soon enough I bought a flowerhorn which had red and blue and black combined color. Let me say that at first that flowerhorn which are male have this exclusive color. The female one are hard to get as they don’t have this much of a color variation over their body.
Now I know that I had bought a male one but 7 years back I dint knew this much. I just founf one and bought one. But back then what the shop-keeper informed me that this fish requires a separate tank.
So I had to buy a 30 gallon tank in order to keep that fish.
I still remember that I was looking at this fish whole night. This flowerhorn fish get’s really amazing colors right?
It was a dream coming true. This was my story with flowerhorn. Let’s dive more into it.
Flowerhorns belongs from the chiclid family
which has a really big rounded head almost looking like the Rhino of the water. They are mostly known for their heads shape and their body’s coloration. Damn those colors on flowerhorn looks so damn pretty!
Flowerhorn’s bump indicates it’s nature. It is said that the more bigger a fishes hump get’s , the more aggressive it becomes. Flowerhorns hump can get upto 5 inch’s where an adult flowerhorn male can reach upto 18 inch’s long!
As we all more or less know that flowerhorn are really aggressive fish. I am not talking about a regular aggressive fish. Flowerhorn are so aggressive that you can not keep two fish together. Like you have to keep one fish at a time in one tank. One fish means only one flowerhorn and no other fish.
Even keeping them with the female flowerhorn can cost you a lot. You can not just add another female right into the tank.
What my technique is that, keep them in a same tank but put a plastic strong net in between them. So that they can see each other but can no come near each other. This technique might help when in times of breeding but it’s not absolute sure that it will gonna work.
But if you are lucky enough, after few days you can remove the net and they will probably swim together and be friendly with each other. If not, immediately remove the female fish. I have seen a lot of people failing in paring flowerhorn.
Flowerhorn has really big upper and
lower fin when it is taken good care of. Along with their big body and huge hump, this fish wont gonna swim faster. They have a really slow movement and often are day dwellers. They are mostly active during the day time. When a proper hiding space is given, they would make them their house.
I have seen a problem in them. In general it’s not a problem but I find it as a problem. Like goldfish, flowerhorns loves to take the substrate inside their mouth and dig whole into substrate which can sometimes be annoying for a lot of you. So what I suggest is to consider smooth gravel as the substrate or use no substrate. Keep the tank simple.
While keeping a flowerhorn you don’t have to maintain a good flow in your tank. The flow should be really less as it will help your fish to not stress out for a bit.
Flowerhorns are carnivorous which means you can add shrimps into their diet or other small fish will do so. Sometimes try to add live fishes as it will make your fish more active!
